About chiropractors and chiropractic therapy

Chiropractic therapy is an “alternate” medicine therapy. The therapy has been around for more than a hundred years. The therapy relies on the self healing ability of the human body. It states that the structure of the body and its functions are related. The therapy is aimed at removing any abnormalities in this relationship. Amongst all the structures of the body, chiropractic therapy pays special attention to the spine.

The actual treatment may vary but it generally involves making adjustments to improve the alignment of the body structures especially the spine. The ailments treated by chiropractors are often pain related such as for back pain, neck pain and headaches.

Chiropractic therapy may be regarded as “alternate” medical therapy but it is a safe therapy for several reasons. It is drug free and non invasive. This is a big plus for the therapy as it aims to work in harmony with nature. It has an excellent safety record though like any medical treatment it is not entirely devoid of risks and adverse effects. The adverse effects if they do occur usually last for only about 24 hours.

Chiropractic therapy can bring immediate relief and is generally known to give results faster than traditional methods. There are documented instances where the therapy has delivered relief faster such as for chronic lower back and spinal pains.

The therapy today is practiced in US by Doctors of Chiropractic with a degree from an accredited institution. Careers in chiropractic are popular and attract talented students. The therapy itself is popular which is a measure of its effectiveness.

Although the therapy has a long tradition it is also forward looking and there is a lot of ongoing research. The research is focused on identifying areas of maximum benefits where the therapy should be used. Research is also being done on evaluating and minimizing the risks involved in the therapy.

If you are suffering from an ailment that is related to the mechanics of the body you should consider chiropractic therapy options. You should be able to find a chiropractor in your area and visit for a consultation. You can find chiropractors in your area at www.findachiropractorpages.com.

Several Advantages Of Using A Medical Call Answering Service

Many medical professionals might be new to the idea of hiring a medical call answering service. Any medical doctor will tell you that their office is constantly bombarded by phone calls from patients after office hours. These phone calls are usually answered by an answering machine or from a voicemail service. This means that the patient has to deal with an automated service that can be difficult and frustrating to use. More importantly, their needs are put on hold until the office opens back up again. This can cause patients a lot of stress and anxiety. By hiring a medical call center, you can provide a higher level of healthcare for your patients than ever before.

There are tons of reasons why hiring a medical call answering service can better your practice. When you hire a company to take these types of calls, you are providing your patients with around the clock care that they will not be able to get anywhere else. Patients will have their calls taken by real people who are in most cases trained in the medical field and can provide them with the type of care they need. Patients will feel as if you truly have their health as a top priority, and this encourages the individual to trust you more as their physician.

Another advantage of hiring a medical call answering service is that you can cut back on wasted time. Many hours of the day in a medical practice are spent answering phone calls and messages left over the weekend or during the night. This will preoccupy your assistants and other staff, meaning you will not have their services at your disposal when you need help examining or treating a patient. You can save all of this time by having a call center deal with the individuals as they call so that your messages are not back logged.

As stated earlier, many of the individuals who are employed by medical call answering service companies are medically trained nurses and other types of professionals. This means that when your patients have questions regarding their health or the treatments they are on, these professionals can give them a medically sound answer without taxing your staff. Patients can also get the information they need any time of the day or night, providing quality care when your patients need it the most. These professionals are often put through HIPPA training to help prevent confidential patient information from being leaked during phone calls.

What Is Guided Discovery In Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

Commonly asked questions by people learning about Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) are –

What is guided discovery?
Is it about the therapist directing the client?
Is Socratic dialogue the same thing as guided discovery?
How do I offer guided discovery?

One thing for sure, is that the concept often feels overwhelming when we first try this type of approach.

My view point is that, guided discovery, can be one of the most beneficial interventions used within CBT. In a nut-shell, guided discovery is a process that a therapist uses to help his or her client reflect on the way that they process information. Through the processes of answering questions or reflecting on thinking processes, a range of alternative thinking is opened up for each client. This alternative thinking forms the blueprint for changing perceptions and behaviours.

Essentially, it could be suggested that a client approaching a CBT therapist is initially functioning at a mindless level. This is not to say that a client is ignorant or not able to think. Rather, that the client has a range of automatic cognitive processes that are being allowed to run without intervention. Some of these thinking processes may have been developed in childhood, while others may directly result from an immediate mood state.

A useful analogy for guided discovery is to think about going to an opticians for an eye test. The optician may initially put a contraption on their clients head with a range of lenses on it. Initially, their clients cannot see through this contraption very well (i.e., what they perceive is a blur). The optician then sets about gradually removing or replacing lenses, and after a while, through a process of trial and error (and feedback from the client) each individual begins to see more clearly.

Guided discovery works in exactly the same way as the above example. Except, instead of using optical lenses, the CBT therapist helps the client use lenses of perception. Perceiving information is a different way allows each client to access a range of choices in their life, ostensibly, to see their life through different lenses. When we view life in a different way our emotional reaction to events also shifts. These types of continued conscious re-evaluations in CBT are very important because they lay the foundations of future automatic thinking and make relapse less likely.

Medical Malpractice – Does An Ineffective Result Mean Malpractice Occurred

Medical malpractice is a niche area of the general civil law field of negligence. It can be a complex area of law. One of the questions that arises from a more practical point of view is whether an ineffective treatment by a doctor constitutes malpractice?

The medical field has changed radically over the years. It wasn’t that long ago patients believed their doctors could do no wrong. The commercialization of the medical care industry has changed that as much of the doctor-patient relationship has been interrupted. This has resulted in a rise in the number of medical malpractice cases being filed across the country.

So, does the result of a treatment mean that the doctor made a legal mistake? Well, anyone that watches medical dramas like House or ER probably knows the answer to that. It is no. Medicine has come a long way, but it is not a cure all for every health situation. Diagnosis can be difficult and so can treatments. The fact a treatment does not work is not per se an indication that malpractice has occurred. If it was, the medical field would be frozen into inaction because of a fear of being sued.

How then do we tell if a physician committed a legal wrong? The answer is in the process. Every condition presented to a medical professional calls for a minimum level of care that should be formed. In this case, the care would include everything from steps of diagnosis to actual treatment. This minimum level is known by the name “standard of care”. So long as a doctor meets the minimum standard of care, he or she cannot be found to have committed malpractice regardless of whether the patient is cured or not.

The standard of care in any case is determined by expert testimony. The experts are doctors in the area who can testify as to what the minimum level of care should have been in the particular case. The defendant and plaintiff each designate an expert for this purpose. You will no doubt be shocked to learn that each tends to present a very different view of what the minimum is and whether the defendant doctor met it. How are these differences dealt with in court? A jury of individuals who have no medical training at all decide!

Medical Malpractice and Statute of Limitations

The statute of limitations with respect to medical malpractice cases can be complex and difficult to calculate. Not only do the laws differ from state to state, time limitations change according to type of injury and whether the claim involves a governmental entity. There can also be various exceptions according to the age of the plaintiff.

The statute of limitations is defined as, -an enactment in a common law legal system that sets the maximum time after an event that legal proceedings based on that event may be initiated.- In other words, the time period between when the injury or wrongful death happened until the final date when a medical malpractice attorney can file the suit.

Always obtain a legal consultation with a personal injury attorney who specializes in medical malpractice law as soon as you suspect you may have a case. If the statute of limitations expires before your medical malpractice suit is filed, the case can be dismissed. If this happens you will have no recourse or means to sue for current injuries or even for future problems that may result for the remainder of your life.

The period of time during which a medical malpractice suit must be filed usually begins with the date of harm. This becomes day one. However, sometimes the injury does not become apparent for days, weeks, months or even years after it happened. In such situations, the statute of limitations could begin running the day the injury was discovered.

For medical malpractice lawsuits brought against health care providers in California, the statute of limitations is filed within three years after the date of the injury, or -one year after the plaintiff discovers, or should have discovered, the injury, whichever occurs first.-

There are exceptions to this rule, the first regarding claims based on a foreign object left inside the injured person’s body (such as surgical scissors or gauze) In these cases the statute of limitations day one begins when the person discovers, or should have discovered, the foreign object. Another exception addresses cases involving minor children under the age of six. For a minor under six, the case must be filed within three years of the date of injury or before the child’s eighth birthday, whichever is the longer amount of time.

Aba Therapy Can Help Improve Verbal Behavior

Autism spectrum disorder can take many forms. For many children, it is first diagnosed by verbal developmental delays and by an inability to communicate thoughts and ideas in a verbal manner. This is unfortunately a very common occurrence for children with autism spectrum disorder, and while it is certainly difficult for both parents and children, the good news is that there is treatment available. ABA therapy, or Applied Behavior Analysis therapy, is very effective at helping to improve verbal behavior for autistic children, and it is the most widely approved treatment available for children with an autism spectrum disorder.

ABA therapy works through the use of discretionary trial teaching. This method of teaching essentially breaks down a desired behavior or action into the most basic possible steps. Each step is repeated as often as needed until it is able to be mimicked. The steps are first taught using verbal and other prompts, and as the child learns to mimic the behavior, the prompts are slowly taken away until the child can exhibit the action on his or her own. When this happens, the next step is taught and so on until the behavior itself has been learned.

ABA therapy is incredibly effective, and part of this is due to the way that attention is given throughout the process. While most children learn and benefit from scolding and correction, the same is not true for children with autism spectrum disorder. Instead, scolding or correction is still seen as attention, and positive and negative attention are not weighed differently. With ABA therapy, negative or unwanted actions and verbal behaviors are simply ignored, while appropriate actions and behaviors are rewarded through praise or other rewards. This helps to teach children that appropriate behaviors will offer attention, while negative behaviors award none.

Whenever a child is experiencing verbal delays or communication problems, ABA therapy should certainly be considered. Many school systems offer the training, and there are excellent DVD courses available for both parents and schools. For most children, receiving intensive ABA therapy at both home and school at the earliest age possible offers the most hope for recovery. With proper training, many children are even able to function in a traditional classroom setting. ABA therapy is truly beneficial for children with autism spectrum disorder and can help make life much easier for parents and children alike, especially when it comes to teaching verbal behavior skills.

Blue Light Therapy for Fighting Acne

Blue light therapy is a modern discovery in the fight against acne. Unlike other acne treatment solutions such as medicated creams and expensive dermatological procedures, blue light therapy for acne is more effective, affordable, convenient and free from side effects.

Acne light therapy has typically only been available in a clinical setting, such as a spa or dermatologists office, but a recent up rise in at home treatment systems is making blue light therapy available to the masses. Tabletop lamp like devices such as the “Blue Acne Light” from BlueAcneLight.com use a powerful multi-led bulb that emits light in various spectrums that have been proven to destroy acne and heal skin. The same light spectrums used in the spa and dermatologists machines are offered in a more compact, convenient and more affordable format. Most at home blue light therapy solutions range between $200 and $500. If you compare that to the cost of a spa or dermatologists treatment, which can be anywhere from $40 to $150 per treatment, over a course of 6-8 recommended treatment, these devices easily pay for themselves during the first treatment campaign and can be used if breakouts occur in the future.

Unlike many so called “acne treatment solutions”, blue light therapy is clinically proven effective by independent testing done by the British Journal of Dermatology and has been approved as an effective form of acne treatment by the FDA. It has long been known, and you have likely experienced that when you expose your skin to the sun for a moderate period of time, whether it is naturally or via a tanning bed, acne seems to improve or clear up. This is because of the natural blue light spectrum that the sun provides, even though you don’t see it as blue. The disadvantage to sun exposure and tanning is of course the artificial aging of your skin, not to mention the risk of skin cancer. Blue light therapy focuses specifically on the spectrums outside of the UV range that kill acne bacteria.

It has been proven that blue light in the 405nm-420nm spectrum actually kills Propionibacterium Acnes (P. acnes) bacteria. P. acnes bacteria create tiny molecules called porphryins. When porphyrins are exposed to blue light they produce free radicals that kill the bacteria that cause inflammatory acne. It sounds quite complex, but it’s a wonderfully simple solution.

Much like blue light, red light also has natural healing properties. Red light effectively speeds up the skins natural healing process and prevents scaring. The root of red lights healing properties is that when red light is absorbed into the skin it increases blood and oxygen flow. This increased blood and oxygen flow allow scars and blemishes to disappear much quicker than normal. The higher end home treatment Blue Light Therapy solutions on the market combine the acne fighting powers blue light with the healing powers of the red light, and effectively become a “destroy and heal” solution, exactly what it takes to clear up problematic acne.

The Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage Therapy

The Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage Therapy

In this article, you will learn about deep tissue massage therapy, the benefits of investing in such an activity, and whether you should consider this therapy.

Deep tissue massage therapy is a type of massage performed to release the restrictions found in deeper muscle and connective tissues. This therapy is recommended for people with chronic pain or those involved in intense physical activities. People who have regular physical injuries should also consider deep tissue massage therapy.

When muscles are contracted and remain so for a long period, they can become inflamed and constrict the oxygen flow around the body. The massage is performed mainly on the knots found on the body by applying pressure consistently on the targeted area until the knot disappears. Deep tissue massage therapy can be considered as corrective in this case.

Although great improvements can be noticed after one hour of massage, this is mainly a therapy. Deep tissue massage therapy needs to be performed on a regular basis in order to get rid of all the knots present. Experts recommend once per week and self-massages done in-between these sessions.

The reduced circulation of oxygen around the body can significantly impact overall health. This can also cause a buildup of toxins in the body, especially in the muscle area. The removal of the knots will lead to improved circulation of cerebraspinal fluids, lymph, blood, and intestinal fluids.

You need to remember that this is not a replacement for good posture, diet, relaxation, and exercise. Deep tissue massage therapy should be used in conjunction with good posture, diet, and relaxation and physical exercise for optimal results.

We have gone over what deep tissue massage therapy is and the benefits involved. You should consider this as part of leading a healthy lifestyle. As mentioned above, this is not a replacement for great daily habits. It can be corrective but the effects can fade after only one day.

Athletes have seen chronic pains coming back when relying only on deep tissue massage therapy as a corrective measure. Relaxation can deeply enhance its effects since most of the knots are caused by stress and blocked thoughts. If you lack the balance between mental and physical exertion, deep tissue massage therapy is a great choice for you.

Manual Therapy For The Treatment Of Temporomandibular Disorder New Research

You notice some pain in your jaw when chewing, which progressively worsens over several weeks. Occasionally you feel a clicking or catching in your jaw when opening and closing your mouth. Eventually you are unable to fully open your mouth and experience pain even when you speak. If you have never experienced this, count yourself very lucky. If you have, you are already familiar with the relatively common condition known as TMD.

TMD, short for temperomandibular disorder, is estimated to affect as much as 40% of the population at some point in their lifetimes, and is especially prevalent in the young. Initial diagnosis is typically made through a visit to the dentist, and the eventual treatment multidisciplinary with various management techniques. One of the lesser known treatment techniques, but something that is gaining in popularity, is soft-tissue therapy of the masticatory muscles the muscles used to move the jaw.

As a sports chiropractor using manual soft-tissue therapy on a daily basis, I have treated TMD on many occasions with success, however good research on the subject has been lacking. Recently however, this type of myofascial therapy for TMD was tested for efficacy in a randomized, controlled clinical trial. Researchers from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia examined the clinical effectiveness of manual therapy in the treatment TMD. Specifically, they compared myofascial therapy to myofascial therapy plus self-care and education and no care (the control group in the study).

This was a private clinic-based study, with eligible participants ranging from age 18-50 presenting with jaw pain with or without joint sounds of at least 3 months and a willingness to participate in the study. Patients with physical or psychological contraindications were excluded. The outcome measures were jaw pain at rest, jaw pain upon maximal active opening, and jaw pain upon clenching.

The primary therapy consisted of myofascial release of the masticatory muscles, including the temporalis, medial and lateral pterygoid, and masseter. The subjects were treated twice per week over a period of 6 weeks for a total of 12 therapy sessions. Additionally, one group was given additional education and self-care consisting of self-mobilization, exercises and stretching, as well as general education on TML anatomy, biomechanics, disc displacement and dysfunction, and the role of psychoemotional factors contributing to TMD.

The results showed a statistically significant positive efficacy for both the myofascial therapy only, and the myofascial therapy plus education and self-care groups. Not surprisingly, the therapy plus self-care group showed a better 1 year outcome than the therapy alone group a trend that has been supported for the care of most musculoskeletal conditions.

Although the results of this study are no surprise to those practicing manual therapy, it serves to reinforce what we already know anecdotally. For patients suffering from TMD there is now evidence for another great intervention, and for manual therapists not currently treating TMD, there is a great opportunity to expand your skillset and serve those in need.
